Ecole de physique des Houches

Les Houches is a village located in Chamonix valley, in the French Alps. Established in 1951, the Physics School is situated at 1150 m above sea level in natural surroundings, with breathtaking views on the Mont-Blanc mountain range.

Les Houches Physics School is run by the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA). The 5 school partners of are UGA, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA), the Institut National Polytechnique (Grenoble-INP), and the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon).

How to attend and contribute?

The maximum number of participants is strictly limited to 70. If you are interested in attending and contributing to the conference, and given that the space is very limited, we kindly ask you to first submit your application and submit an abstract for a contributed talk or a poster by December 1.

Arrival/Departure

All participants are highly encouraged to stay for the entire duration of the workshop. Check-in will begin on Sunday starting at 3pm. The school will then close on Friday at 3pm. Please make sure to arrange your travel plans accordingly.

Accommodation

Each participant will be accomodated in single room that is equipped with a private bathroom in chalets (mountain cottages) located on the site of the conference center. Towels, shampoo, soap, shower gel and hair-dryer are provided. Washing machines and dryers are also available. Beware that you may be contacted by a company pretending to arrange your accommodation during your stay in Les Houches, this is scam, please do not reply to their sollicitation if that happens.

Meals

All meals (breakfasts, lunches & dinners) will be served at the school cafeteria for all participants. This will be part of your experience in Les Houches, and a special time for connecting and discussing with other participants. Dietery restrictions can also be accommodated. The cafeteria is equipped with a piano, a table soccer and a table tennis, lively evenings guarenteed!

Weather & other activities

At this time of year, the weather can be quite uncertain, please bring warm clothes in any case as it usually remains quite cold in April. It may even still be snowy up there, with opportunities to ski in the nearest resort located in Les Houches or in the Chamonix valley during the free afternoon on Wednesday. If you are planning instead to go on a hike or climb, please put a note on the special book provided and include the name of the participants, approximate itinerary, schedule and phone number. Hiking maps, snowshoes, bikes, freesbees and sets of pétanque and badminton are available at the school.

We draw your attention to the fact we only hold a collective insurance for accidents occurring on the school campus. Please be careful!

Suggested items to pack:

1. A headlamp or flashlight

5. Comfortable shoes to change once inside

6. A water bottle.
